Saikat has been blessed with an ever-growing and engaged membership base in one of the best cities in the United States. The expansion of our community has lent itself well to one of the things we hold closest to our hearts - giving back to this great city for giving us the opportunity to find a home away from home. The spirit of volunteering has been ingrained in us from our early days when lack of man-power was more than compensated for by an abundance of energy and good will.
Engaging with the broader community in San Diego is by far the most important social activity we undertake. We regularly support local charities like Ronald McDonald House Charities, Feeding America (San Diego), the San Diego Food Bank and Father Joe's Villages.
The food programs are a joyous affair with a large number of Saikat-ians turning up early morning to cook refreshing meals for the less-privileged. Saikat covers the cost of all raw materials. Our members widely appreciate this as it provides them an avenue to give back. Kids love the activity that imparts a number of social skills in a fun setting.
Saikat organizes about six such volunteering programs throughout the year. We are always looking for fresh faces to join us. You can join us in one of our upcoming events or see pictures from a past event via the links below.

In addition to engaging with our immediate community, we always keep in mind the global community. Many among us hold dear memories for our homeland of the past in India - and that bond is reflected in several charitable ventures we have undertaken for social causes in India over the years.
In August 2009, Saikat initiated a new charitable venture called SHIELD (Sustainable Health Improvement and Educational Development) project to raise funds to sponsor needy children across the world. While many of our members support charities focused on providing children a better future, there are many whose means may not be enough to realize their wish to be a provider.
The SHIELD program aims to fill that gap by helping accumulate funds from many members into a sizable amount that can provide meaningful support to worthy charities across the world.
An example of our effort coming to fruition is the support for Ananya Ghosh, a four-year old girl in Kolkata, India, via the charitable organization, Children International. Ananya's sponsorship was made possible through the generous donations of our members. Saikat is committed to this project until Ananya graduates from high school or 19 years old. She is now 11 years old. It is expected that, like the current EC, future ECs will continue to support this project
Saikat is quick to respond to social and natural disasters across the world. In times when quick aid is essential, Saikat acts as the conduit that helps to quickly accumulate meaningful sums of money across our membership base. It all started with us raising funds for the victims of the 9-11 attacks. Since then, we have regularly raised funds for events like super-cyclone victims of Orissa, Bengal and Bangladesh, flood victims in West Bengal and earthquake victims in Gujarat.
We welcome you to be part of Saikat's volunteering and charitable activities in any capacity you can. We request all members and well-wishers of Saikat to come forward and support us in this worthy cause. Together, we can strive for a better future for the next generation of humanity.
